On the second Tuesday of every month (known as black Tuesday in the world of IT Administrators) Microsoft releases updates for its various Windows Operating Systems. These updates address issues including fixing minor problems, improving performance, adding new features, and addressing potential security problems.
Unfortunately, many users choose to ignore these updates and continue to run their machines in an un-patched state. Not only are these users potentially missing out on new features and improved stability on their systems, they are also leaving themselves far more vulnerable to viruses and other attacks.
Running the updates is easy. If you have automatic updates enabled, a small yellow shield may pop up in the bottom right corner to let you know that there are updates available. Double-click on the shield and follow the step-by-step instructions to download and install updates. If you don’t have automatic updates, click on the Start Button, go to Programs, and choose either Microsoft Update or Windows Update. Again, follow the step-by-step instructions and install all critical updates.
